Discover Tannat in DC’s Wine Country®

Loudoun’s Next Great Grape is Beloved in South America

Canelones, Uruguay and Loudoun, Virginia are two dynamic wine regions in opposite hemispheres. One common bond they share is Tannat, the national grape of Uruguay and a grape that’s increasingly taking root in Loudoun. Tannat wines are typically rich, deep reds, often with flavors of plums, cherry, black currant and spices.

The Tannat connection has sparked a wine exchange program, which includes a delegation of winemakers visiting each region in the spirit of mutual learning and cultural immersion. The similarities between Loudoun and Canelones go beyond wine – there’s the equestrian connection (especially Polo), a love of shopping and dining and an elevated wine country experience close to a major urban hub. Loudoun is just 25 miles west of Washington, DC and home to Dulles International Airport.

Loudoun is currently celebrating the 40th anniversary of its flourishing wine scene, which is home to 50+ wineries. Many have earned accolades and honors while Loudoun itself was recently ranked 4th best wine region to visit in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Now is the perfect time to savor a bit of South America right here in DC’s Wine Country®.
