Is Virginia sparkling wine the same as champagne?
No. "Champagne" is a protected name that can only be used on sparkling wine produced in the Champagne region of France. Loudoun winemakers produce sparkling wine using the same techniques, including the traditional method, in which the second fermentation occurs inside the bottle.
What is the difference between traditional-method and Charmat-method sparkling wine?
Traditional method means the second fermentation takes place in the individual bottle, where the wine then ages on the lees. It produces finer bubbles and more layered flavor. Charmat method carries out that second fermentation in a pressurized tank, which keeps the fruit brighter and the style fresher. Loudoun wineries make both.
How far is Loudoun from Washington, DC?
Loudoun begins roughly 25 miles west of Washington, DC, and most of the wine clusters sit within western Loudoun, an hour's drive of the city. Washington Dulles International Airport is located in eastern Loudoun.

Policies vary by winery. Check the individual winery listing before heading out, particularly for weekend visits and information about bringing groups.
How many wineries can I visit in a day?
Two to three is a comfortable pace for a single day. Grouping by cluster helps – wineries in the same cluster sit close together, which cuts driving time and leaves room for a meal in between.
When is the best time to visit for sparkling wine?
Sparkling wine is poured year-round in Loudoun. However, harvest season (September through October) is a busy and festive time of year that offers opportunities to extend your stay and take in notable annual events.
