Civil War Captured

Start the day at Mount Zion Baptist Church, which acted as a barrack, hospital, battleground and cemetery during the Civil War. Here, meet your John Singleton Mosby costumed guide and explore the Civil War history along Route 50 (Mosby Highway). Stop at Aldie Mill, home to the Battle of Aldie, which occurred exactly two weeks before Gettysburg, then visit Goose Creek Bridge for a musket firing demonstration.

The tour ends in Middleburg, VA another site along the Gettysburg Campaign. Explore and shop in this quaint country town before lunch at the Red Fox Inn and Tavern. Established in 1728, the Red Fox is the oldest continually operating inn in the US. During the Civil War, Col. John Mosby and his rangers planned daring raids in the upstairs rooms while injured soldiers were cared for in the rooms below. The inn’s pine service bar, still in use, served as an operating table for a field surgeon during the war.

Hike through the hallowed grounds of Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park. Journey the trails made to recreate the 1861 landscape of The Battle of Ball’s Bluff. With one of the smallest national cemeteries in the country, the park is an honest reminder of the Civil War’s impact on Northern Virginia and the rest of the country.

Visit Morven Park and tour the grounds in which Confederate soldiers stayed the winter after their Ball’s Bluff victory. Explore the recreated log huts that housed soldiers, the estate’s mansion, carriage house museum and 1,000 acres of lawns, fields and gardens.

Dinner tonight is at Tuscarora Mill. Known colloquially as "Tuskie’s" the restaurant has earned its reputation through its authentically local experience felt in the ambiance and décor, conveyed by the passionate staff and evident in the quality cuisine. Housed in a 19th century grain mill, this restaurant is sure to take you back in time.
