African American History
From historic sites and hidden cemeteries, to places commemorating the National Underground Railroad, Loudoun honors its African American heritage without shying away from its past. The county had a peak population of 6,078 enslaved peoples in 1800, but also a significant number of freedmen, thanks in part to its location on the border of North and South, and the large population of Quakers, abolitionists and later, Union sympathizers.
