The holidays are over and across the country people are getting hit with record cold weather and snow. But, as someone who grew up in Michigan, the cold, snowy days remind me of spending time with family, sledding down hills and game nights with friends around the fireplace.
Now that I work in the heart of Virginia wine country, I love making new memories and spending winter days at our wineries, some of which offer warm fireplaces, hot soups and activities that will make you forget about the dropping temperatures outside.
Wineries with fireplaces
Many Loudoun wineries are open year-round and offer cozy tasting rooms with a fire to warm you. At Otium Cellars’ log cabin-style tasting room, sip a glass of merlot by the fireplace then head to try some bubbly by a beautiful stone fireplace at The Vineyards & Winery at Lost Creek. Many weekends, you can listen to live music by the fire at The Barns at Hamilton Station, which has a tasting room in a restored 100-year-old stone and wood dairy barn.
Who doesn’t enjoy a hot bowl of soup on a cold day? Not only does Loudoun feature award-winning wines, but many offer some delicious food pairings. At Stone Tower Winery, you can stay warm by the outdoor fire pit while enjoying hot soup on Sundays and at Willowcroft Farm Vineyards, savor potato bacon soup Jan. 24-25. Fabbioli Cellars also has Souper Sundays through January where people can savor a free cup of soup with the purchase of wine or a wine tasting. At 868 Estate Vineyards, guests can enjoy soup created by the chef at neighboring Grandale Restaurant every Saturday and Sunday through Feb 1.
The long, cold days of winter will last more than a few weeks, so book an overnight stay and visit one of the many winter wine events in Loudoun. If you are looking for a laugh, Bogati Bodega will host a comedy night January 24 and Notaviva Vineyards will have its annual My Funny Valentine comedy night Feb. 13 and 14. If you are a chocolate lover like me, check out Breaux Vineyards Chocolate and Cabernet Tasting Feb. 13-15 for hand-rolled truffles and wine. For all you science lovers, discover the technical details behind making a great wine with Doukenie Winery’s Taste of Science event Feb 7 and March 7. The winery’s resident geologist takes guests on a behind-the-scenes tour through the vineyard and winery as well as a barrel room tasting.
