You know the feeling when you wake up, and it’s just too beautiful of a day that you couldn’t possibly stay inside? Yeah, we have a lot of those days in a Loudoun summer.

Throughout this entire season, there seems to be an ever-present aura of fun and freedom accompanied by the blissful assurance that we’ve still got weeks and weeks of summer break. (Isn’t it funny how we still totally have that feeling as adults, even though we’re not going back to school?) All we can say is this: lean into that feeling, friends, and embark on an outdoor summer adventure with us in Loudoun County, VA!

Nature Walks

Leave the hustle and bustle of the city far behind and set out to explore the relaxing tree-lined landscape and breathtaking scenic views Loudoun has to offer. With a wide variety of trails for beginners or avid hikers, Loudoun offers several beautiful parks and overlooks that are sure to provide you with miles of motivational scenery on your active hikes or strolls!

Spotlight: Algonkian Regional Park

Situated on the scenic Potomac River in Sterling, Virginia, Algonkian Regional Park is the perfect place for an afternoon of fun in the sun! The park features a gorgeous, winding nature trail where you’re bound to spot creatures of all kinds, from deer and turtles to cardinals and fox! After exploring the great outdoors, enjoy a picnic in the park or hit the golf course, driving range or miniature golf. Volcano Island Waterpark, located within Algonkian, is another perfect place to cool off after your summer nature walk! Or, bring your own kayak or canoe and head into the Potomac itself; the park’s boat launch is an excellent entry point to explore the river!

While the park also offers 12 fully-equipped, riverfront vacation cottages, who could resist an opportunity to sleep beneath the stars?! Join us on our Summer of Love Tour as we stop at Algonkian Regional Park for a Community Camp Out on August 3rd! Immerse yourself in nature with a guided hike before settling into your tents for the evening. Registration for overnight camping is $10/person, but everyone is welcome to join for the earthy activities! Please remember to bring all your own camping supplies. Tree-hugging most definitely encouraged. The Summer of Love bus will be hangin' out until 8 PM on the 3rd!

Farm Experiences 

Part of the lure of Loudoun County is our agricultural community, who have loved this land for generations! Summer is the perfect time to explore the ripe bounty of the Earth and reconnect with our environment through a special farm experience

Spotlight: Great Country Farms

Gather your own fruit and veggies with friends and family while enjoying a day of fresh country air at Great Country Farms! This 400-acre family farm offers seasonal pick-your-own peaches, blackberries & tart cherries in the summer. Other awesome activities include wagon rides, the giant jumping pillow, gem mining, catch and release fishing, goats to visit and feed, rope swings, mazes, giant slides, doodle carts and so much more.

Ready for your fun-on-the-farm experience? August means it’s prime peach-picking time in Loudoun! Join us on our Summer of Love Tour as we stop at Great Country Farms’ famous Peach Daze Fuzztival on August 4th. The Fuzztival includes a peach pancake breakfast, peach eating contest, family water games and live music. Our tour bus will be there to help celebrate this peachy keen season in all its fruity bounty!

Biking 

It may be pre-driver’s-license nostalgia talking, but a day of nothing but riding our bikes around just seems like the ultimate summertime activity! Pedal away from city life and escape to rural bliss in Loudoun County.

Spotlight: Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail

Pop on your helmets and cycle down the W&OD Trail! A popular 45-mile trail in Northern Virginia, the W&OD runs from Shirlington to Purcellville and offers a vehicle-free, paved path the entire way so that riders can cycle in sweet serenity through the Loudoun countryside. The trail also runs through Sterling, Ashburn, Leesburg and Purcellville – creating perfect access points to many fun, bikeable downtown areas. With plenty of breweries, shops and restaurants just steps from the W&OD, you really can’t go wrong!

Potomac River

Come on in, the water’s fine! The Potomac River is one of our favorite places to be in the heart of the summer. And since Loudoun County shares miles of shoreline with the Potomac, there’s always an adventure awaiting us just around the river bend! 

Spotlight: Harpers Ferry Adventure Center

Whether you want to try whitewater rafting through the rapids, kayaking or canoeing on the river, or a relaxing tubing float – the possibilities are endless at Harpers Ferry Adventure Center. Head out to the center’s Purcellville location where you can rent all the equipment for a day on the water and even take guided tours through the river. With multiple choices, there is something for every skill level!

Ready for your next adventure? Check out HFAC’s aerial park and zip through the beautiful tree canopy. Experience the thrill of flying with seven different ziplines and a 100-foot sky bridge. Next, challenge yourself with a turn on the ropes course!

Golf 

With several golf options in the area, Loudoun can definitely help get your summer swingin’! Located in the beautiful Northern Virginia countryside and home to some of the top courses in the Mid-Atlantic, Loudoun boasts luxury golf clubs featuring courses designed by professional golfers, breathtaking acreage situated along the scenic Potomac River and several driving ranges perfect for practice.
