Kick off the summer season with an outdoor adventure in wine country! With mountains, rivers and miles of rolling countryside, Loudoun is a perfect place to explore Mother Nature’s natural wonders as we celebrate Great Outdoors Month.  Here are some ways outdoor enthusiasts can explore Loudoun by air, land or water.

By air:

Soar high among the treetops at one of the ziplining courses in Loudoun. At Empower Adventures, visitors are told to “zip on” as they fly through the Middleburg treetops on five zips and two rope bridges. Experience the course by day or by night where the moon and the stars light the way.  At Evergreen Sportsplex, take one of four zip lines, two of which take you to their ropes course where you can continue the adventure.

Another way to get a bird’s eye view of the countryside is on the new Aerial Adventure Course at Harpers Ferry Adventure Center. The multi-level challenge course includes rope and cable bridges, obstacles and other adventures for people of all ages.

By land:

Grab your bike and take a ride down the W&OD Trail. Built along the roadbed of the former Washington & Old Dominion Railroad, this car-free path takes visitors 45 miles from Alexandria to the town of Purcellville. Along the route in Loudoun, stop between mile marker 25 and 26 for a local craft beer at Old Ox Brewery or some live music at Lost Rhino Brewery. For a guided bike tour through wine country, check out Trail’s End Cycling’s wine tours that wind through 20 miles of countryside and stop at local vineyards.

Embrace Loudoun’s rich horse history with a trail ride through the country. Salamander Resort & Spa offers numerous equestrian programs including trail rides and yoga in the barn.  For a more intimate stay, try Serene Manor where overnight guests can get riding lessons or enjoy a scenic horseback trail ride.

By water:

Located on the banks of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, Harpers Ferry Adventure Center offers numerous opportunities for people to get onto the water.  Recreate the days you floated down a lazy river at a waterpark with a tubing adventure. Relax with friends and soak up the sun while you slowly float downstream. If you want to put a little arm work into the adventure, kayak, canoe or join a guided whitewater rafting trip.
