October signifies many things. The mugginess of summer has faded into cooler days and nights. The leaves are starting to change and will peak with autumn color soon. The farms are overflowing with the end of the season’s harvest and pumpkins, gourds, and squashes are showing up everywhere – from the roadside stand to the new menus and specials at local farm to table restaurants. The vineyards are also in the middle of harvest, bringing in the fruit that will become the 2012 vintage. Here in Virginia, we love October for all of these reasons and one more – October is also Virginia Wine Month.
How can you celebrate Virginia Wine Month? “Discover Your Local Crush” is the call to action of the Virginia Wine Month campaign and if you’re not familiar with Loudoun wines, now is a great time to discover them. Loudoun alone has 33 wineries. If you start today, you could visit every one this month! If that task is too daunting, start with something new. There are several wineries that just opened this year, more on the way, and the beauty of wine is that with each vintage, there’s something new to experience. Or check out one of the numerous harvest festivals and fairs like Chrysalis’ Norton Wine & Bluegrass festival this weekend. Local restaurants and retailers will be featuring specials on Virginia wines as well as Virginia wine dinners and tastings. And if you act now, you can enter to win two seats on the Virginia Crush Bus, coming to Loudoun on October 27th for a full day of tasting, touring, and taking in all that makes October in Loudoun very crush-worthy. In the meanwhile, check back on our blog throughout the month for features on what’s new at Loudoun’s original wineries, what new wineries are opening, and more great Virginia wine news.
