In the eastern part of Loudoun County, the W&OD Railroad helped give birth to another off-the-beaten-path settlement. Taking shape in 1890 when some 90 acres were subdivided into building lots, Paeonian Springs was once known for its excellent supply of spring water and as a haven for visitors from Washington, DC. A water bottling plant, confectionary store, blacksmith shop, private preparatory school for boys, and a mill were among the town's attractions.
Today, Paeonian Springs harbors about 230 residents. After a stop at the charming Gardens of Delight nursery and Paeonian Springs Grocery and Gourmet across Route 9, visitors pause to let cyclists on the W&OD trail whiz across Simpson Circle before stopping to mail a letter at the quaint little post office housed in an extension of a private home.
