Loudoun's smallest town.
Some 100 residents call Hillsboro home, where the most contemporary structure dates to the late 1800s. The second smallest Virginia town in geographic size, Hillsboro is also the state's fourth smallest in population.
Once known as the "Gap in the Short Hill" for the Short Hill Mountains, Hillsboro was the site of an ordinary built in 1754 whose visitors included George Washington. A woolen mill was established in 1758 and Quaker families came here from Pennsylvania to further establish the community as a mill town. By 1831, Hillsboro's mills flourished. A lumber mill, two flour mills, and the woolen mill operated in the town. In 1880 it was officially incorporated.
Handsome old dwellings of stone, log, and frame face each other across a busy highway from their solid foundations on a hillside. Hunt Country Jewelers is worth the stop for custom-designed jewelry, and New Life Antiques is tucked away in a former church building.
Nearby Grandale Farm Restaurant offers farm-to-table cuisine in an intimate 32 seat dining room with addtional seating on an outdoor deck and pergola.
Residents and visitors alike look forward to the town's annual homes tour and crafts fair during the holiday season.
