Appalachian Trail
![]()
There are several nice hikes located in western Loudoun. Several of these are along the Appalachian Trail. The most popular hike is up to Bears Den. The Bears Den trail head is located just off Rt. 7 west of Round Hill and Bluemont. The hike to the Bears Den overlook from the parking area is less than 1 hour round trip depending on how fast you hike. The view looks out over Rt 7. and points west. For a more strenuous and longer hike, I would recommend the hike to Ravens Rock. To access the trail use the trailhead on the north side of Rt. 7. Be aware, the hike can be difficult in stretches but the views at Ravens Rock are very nice. Ravens Rock is just over the VA border into WV. Allow about 3 hours up and back.

Sunset Hills Vineyard

The first thing I have to mention is the first thing anyone will notice about Sunset Hills Vineyard - this place is gorgeous. The owners restored an old barn and did so beautifully. The sunsets & views are pretty amazing but we unfortunately did not experience them on this February day. After we gawked at the space for awhile we moseyed up to the mahogany bar centered in the tasting room. The woman conducting our tasting was very friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about the wines which were all good. The owners started growing the grapes in 1997 and just opened the winery Summer of 2008. Our favorite was the Cabernet Sauvignon, smooth & full. They also offer two styles of Chardonnay (one stainless & crisp, the other oaked & buttery). It's nice to taste them side by side. I'm looking forward to spending a warm spring afternoon on their deck with a glass of that crisp Chardonnay!

Bluemont Vineyard
![]()
I have been a fan of Bluemont Vineyards since they opened. I took my mom there for the first time this weekend. We were celebrating her birthday with a tour of some Loudoun wineries she had never visited. She loved all three wineries but this was her favorite. It's easy to love Bluemont Vineyards - the view is amazing, the owners & atmosphere are relaxed and very welcoming, and the wines are good to boot! I'm eagerly anticipating the release of this year's Peach and Rose wines, my two favorites from Bluemont. Oh, and I definitely recommmend making it the final stop of any wine tour. Once you're settled on their deck, you really don't want to leave!
