Happy New Year! Although this is our December issue of the Tourism Industry Compass, we're sending it now so it did not get lost in the holiday mail in your inbox. There are some exciting events taking place in the next few months. The LCVA's 11th Annual Meeting will convene at the Clubhouse at Lansdowne Resort on March 30th and will honor tourism industry leaders and front-line employees for their contributions to the business of tourism in Loudoun County in 2006. LCVA Board of Directors' elections will also be held during the Annual Meeting. If you are interested in becoming an LCVA Board Member, or know someone who should be considered, the deadline for nominations is January 16th. 2007 is an important year in Virginia and Loudoun County with the commemoration of the 400th Anniversary of America's birthplace in Jamestown and locally the celebration of Loudoun's 250th Anniversary. In 2008, the celebrations will continue with Leesburg's 250th Anniversary and Purcellville's 100th. Let the festivities begin!

  • Save the Date: The LCVA's 11th Annual Meeting and Tourism Awards Luncheon will take place on Friday, March 30, 2007 at the Clubhouse at Lansdowne Resort.   • The LCVA is now accepting nominations for the 2006 Tourism Awards, which will be presented at the LCVA Annual Meeting on March 30, 2007.  Please see the Loudoun Tourism Industry Site for more information and downloadable nomination forms. The deadline for receipt of nominations at the LCVA offices is Friday, January 19, 2007.

  • The LCVA is looking for individuals to serve on its Board of Directors for three-year terms starting July 1, 2007. Please see the Loudoun Tourism Industry Site for more information. Submissions are due at the LCVA offices by Tuesday, January 16, 2007. Elections will be held at the LCVA Annual Meeting on March 30, 2007.

Industry News
  • In December, Jolene Butler of the National Conference Center was presented with the Associate of the Year Award from the Virginia Society of Association Executives in Richmond, VA.

  • Linda Medalla has been named Area Director of Sales and Marketing for the Washington Dulles Airport Marriott and the Washington Dulles Marriott Suites. Linda most recently served as the Director of Group Sales at the historic Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. where she oversaw an eight person sales team producing over 90,000 group room nights. Prior to her current position, Linda served as a Senior Account Executive with responsibility for the international, leisure, and diplomatic markets. Before embarking on her career in sales, Linda served in the operational side of our business with positions in Housekeeping, Reservations, and Event Management.

  • Dave Monroe has joined the Hampton Inn Dulles Cascades as the General Manager. Dave most recently was the General Manager of two Washington D.C. boutique hotels.

  • Than-Thao Thi Nguyen, a Guest Service Agent at the new SpringHill Suites Hotel was just awarded a $4,000 college scholarship by the Dulles International Airport Rotary Club. Than-Thao attends Park View High School where she has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5+ or higher.

  • As of January 1, 2007, Windham Winery changed its name to Doukenie Winery.

  • Clyde's Willow Creek Farm restaurant opened in December in Broadlands at 42920 Broadlands Blvd, 571-209-1200. For more information click here.

  • The Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum has a new exhibit "Model Tractors and Farm Equipment: Objects from the Philip Marshall Collection" which will be on display through January 28, 2007. For more information click here.

  • Local officials and the Leesburg/Loudoun 250th Anniversary Committee held a news conference on December 28, 2006 at the county's historic courthouse in Leesburg to kick off Loudoun's 250th Anniversary Celebration in 2007. For more information click here

  • Purcellville Wine and Gourmet held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 11, 2006 and the LCVA was invited to attend. For more information click here.

Program Updates
  •  The LCVA welcomed more than 100 industry partners, community leaders and friends during the LCVA Holiday Open House in early December. 82 guests also signed up to receive this industry eNewsletter, the Tourism Industry Compass.

  • VISIT LOUDOUN: The 2007-2008 Official Visitors Guide to Loudoun County, Virginia has been completed and will go to print in early January 2007 with a delivery date prior to the first tradeshow of 2007 (Bridal Showcase) which takes place at the end of January. The LCVA Wedding Guide is included in the new Visitors Guide as a special section. A special edition of the Guide will also be placed in Loudoun County hotel rooms.   • The LCVA will be exhibiting again this year at the Patriot Center Bridal Showcase on January 28, 2007. This year the LCVA would like to offer 4 packages as prizes in a drawing to entice prospective brides and grooms to sign up to receive further information or services from the LCVA. The prizes would be drawn quarterly over the coming year from couples who are planning to hold their wedding, or have already set the date of their wedding in Loudoun County. The themes of the packages are: Golf, Middleburg Shopping/Wine, Leesburg Shopping/Spa, and Bachelors Day Out in Loudoun. Sales Activity Report
  • The LCVA placed advertisements in the following publications: Washington Post, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Raleigh News and Observer.

  • The LCVA hosted a CRUSA/United Airlines/Marriott tour operators' familiarization tour of wineries and lunch with a windshield tour of Leesburg. The tour was comprised of 8 of the top tour operators from Germany and Switzerland.

  • An article on Loudoun's wine country ran in The Australian (the top daily newspaper in Australia) at the beginning of December. LCVA hosted the travel writer in the fall.

  • The LCVA met with the regional travel writer and photographer from Southern Living Magazine at the beginning of December during their visit to Middleburg to cover the Middleburg Hunt Parade and holiday celebrations.

  • The LCVA exhibited at a health fair at Rockwell Collins in Sterling.
